AI-Driven Grammar Challenge Drag the Words

The English language textbook I’m currently using has a reading passage with the words ‘was’, ‘were’ weren’t’ and ‘wasn’t’ missing. Students were given the options and had to write the words in the correct place in their books to complete the paragraph.

This type of activity is a commonly used way to review grammar points. However, it takes a while to write a reading passage, ensure it’s at the correct English level and find an image related to it to make it more engaging. Luckily, AI tools can help. Let’s look at how to quickly create a reading passage with grammar questions with AI tools.

First, open an AI tool such as Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini or Chat GPT.

Next, ask it to write a reading passage about a topic and specify the CEFR level. I teach in Saudi so my prompt was “Write a short paragraph about a visit to a Saudi farm in Taif at CEFR level A2. I want to make it a fill in the gaps activity where the answers are ‘was’ ‘wasn’t’ ‘were’ and ‘weren’t’.

Next review the text it created. It did a good job of highlighting the fill in the gaps in bold. I’ll only use four target words to stay on task to review the grammar point. I would have liked it to be fill in the gaps but I’ve found there are issues with H5P recognising different types of apostrophes so I’ll make it a drag the words activity instead.

Unfortunately, this means that there can only be one instance of each word because if there are two ‘was’ for example, H5P would see them as two different words that only had one correct position. In other words, the user may get feedback they got an incorrect answer if more than one of the same words is used. If I took the time to write it myself this would be frustrating but since it only took a few seconds with AI it’s ok so I shortened the text.

Next, go to an AI text to image tool such as playground.com to create a suitable image. I selected a 16×9 size because my students will see this content on a phone and a computer.

Next, go to H5P and select either Quiz (Question Set) or Drag the Words. Paste the text putting * * around each word that needs to be dragged and upload the image,

After that click Metadata to add the rights of use. Playground.com allows you to own your images.

Finally, click save and test it out.
